Weight Bench With Weights - What Makes It Stand
Out?
The standard weight bench without the free weights like barbells
and dumbbells work just fine. You can use it for other
movements not requiring free weights, as is the case with abdominal
exercises. But if you want to take your exercise program to the
next level, we strongly suggest going for a weight bench
with weights.
Attachments Galore
As can be implied from the name, a weight bench with free weights
combines the structure of the standard weight bench with various
attachments, accessories and extensions. In many ways, it is
a mini-gym without the mechanical moving parts involved and,
therefore, the price that comes with it.
These attachments vary in shape, size and weight as well as
purpose. Large barbells are positioned over one part of the
weight bench, specifically on the head part, which is necessary for
bench presses. You should have a rack attached to the weight
bench with weights to hold the barbell after you are finished with
the exercise.
Dumbbell racks are also positioned either in one end or under the
weight bench as a slide-out accessory. In this way, you are
exposed to lesser risks of tripping over dumbbells lying around on
the floor.
Bench extensions are also available. Basically, you have
additional space in which to work the different muscle groups, as
is the case with sit-ups and crunches. You may also perform
these exercises on the floor but doing so on the bench adds a
certain degree of technical difficulty with the aim of feeling more
burn.
While barbells are added on to the head part of the weight bench
with weights, leg attachments may be added to the opposite part.
These leg accessories allow for exercises like leg extensions and
leg curls, which are necessary to achieve a balanced look from the
shoulders to the calves. We did say that this kind of weight
bench is like a mini-gym in many respects as it provides a platform
for the performance of various types of exercises from the chest to
the legs and from the front to the back.
Choice in Weights
So, your next question will be regarding the correct choice of
weight attachments. Well, it really depends on your exercise
goals in relation to the weight bench. If you only intend to
use the bench for bench presses, then a barbell with rack will
do. But for a few dollars more, you can get a full body
workout with the addition of the leg attachments, the dumbbells and
the bench extension.
As for the weight of the free weights themselves, the most
important considerations are good grip on the handle, sufficient
resistance for your workout level and maneuverability of the
weights. You may think that this is not very scientific but
do keep in mind that it is your body that must be considered first
and foremost. So, if the weight feels comfortable in your hands and
you can grip the weights in a safe manner, then it's most likely
the best free weight for you.
You can choose your own weight bench with weights on your own, of
course. We do recommend products like the Competitor weight
bench with its 100-pound weight set and the Valor Athletics
Olympic bench press for their good qualities, as reviewed
by many consumers.
